Glasgow Kelvin College, BDes Jewellery Design and Technology Degree Show

With the degree shows season at Scottish universities and colleges underway, I have take the opportunity  to see what is being produced by the new generation of artists in Scotland!

Last Friday was the BDes Jewellery Design and Technology at Glasgow Kelvin College’s opening night. I was delighted to be invited to the event and couldn't miss this great occasion to check out the work of such a talented team. It was lovely to see so many Gemstones Brazil gems set in a host of amazing pieces of art. It made me feel very proud to be part of the jewellery community!

I have to admit, I will miss many of those people on future visits to the college but I am sure we will keep in touch. I am very positive about their futures in the jewellery industry.

Here are just some samples of what I had a pleasure to see in the show!

Very beautiful and unique ring collection inspired in the  botanical world

Elegant and  very attractive necklace and bracelet
by Sarah Russell, who inspired her collection in the flowers and plants.

Sublime, delicate and organic collection of rings inspired in the nature, specifically marine life

Really elaborated and refined collection
According to the artist, she has "tried to capture the darkness from within these stories, alluding to many familiar allegorical symbols such as Hansel and Gretel’s ribbon of breadcrumbs/stones to lead them out of the forest, Snow White’s poisoned apple, and Little Red Riding Hood’s wolf. Combinations of elements from these are unified into a coherent whole."

Gorgeous and very powerful rings based on childhood memories of Fair Isle by Inness Thomson

You guys rock!

Gemstones Brazil is very happy to be invited to participate in the Making Jewellery Work, a one-day symposium promoted by Vanilla Ink and the Scottish Goldsmiths Trust.

Combining the strengths of the two organisations, ‘Making Jewellery Work’ will explore subjects including the face of the current jewellery industry in Scotland today, trends in the wider industry and their effects on smaller businesses, and the approaches of different jewellery designers in developing collections and their markets. Speakers include Fi Scott of Make Works; Scott Walter, Assay Master, Edinburgh Assay Office; as well as  jewellers Smith/Grey and Georgia Wiseman.

Taking place on the same day as the launch of the Vanilla Ink’s End of Year Show, some of the ‘graduating’ Inkers will also be reflecting on their experiences.

A little bit about Vanilla Ink & Scottish Goldsmiths Trust…..

Founded in 2009, Vanilla Ink offers a unique bridge from education into the industry, providing mentoring, business training and support to emerging jewellers.

The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust, the charitable arm of the Incorporation of Goldsmiths of Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Assay Office, is dedicated to the education and preservation of the art and craft of gold and silversmithing in Scotland.

About the Symposium!

The symposium will be held on Friday 12th September 2014 at Discovery Point in Dundee and is free to attend. The optional  ‘Meet & Make’  lunch is £11.50. Tickets are available here

The event will also include an informal knowledge sharing lunch ‘Meet and Make’, featuring showcases from MAKLab, Cloud 9, us at Gemstones Brazil and Vanilla Ink’s ‘5 Years On’ makers, including Jane Gowans; Hanah Livingstone of Black Box Boutique, Edinburgh; and Skye-based jeweller Heather McDermott.  The lunch will be an ideal opportunity for sharing knowledge and skills and for some informal networking.

I hope to see you there!

I am delighted to announce that Gemstones Brazil is back
at the Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines Mineral & Gem Fair 2014!

Here at Gemstones Brazil, we are very happy to announce that we are going to be exhibiting at the upcoming Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines Mineral & Gem Fair from the 27th to the 29th of June. The renowned mineral fair of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines (Alsace, France) draws more than 30,000 visitors each year who come to meet approximately 1000 exhibitors from 52 countries representing every continent. Gemstones Brazil is going to be in great location: Parc Jules Simon - stand number 11.

The beautiful village Sainte Marie-aux-Mines is located in the massif of the Vosges Mountains, surrounded on both sides by the valley Val d'Argent. The place is celebrated for it’s famous old mines recorded for the first time as far back as 1317. The Mineral Show dates back to the early 1960, when Francois Lehmann organized a small mineral exhibition. Quickly, the fair became a tourist attraction in the area and the current Mineral Show started in 1966.

Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines is quite a small town, and it is completely taken over by the fair to create a wonderfully unique atmosphere. Hundreds of stands exhibiting minerals, fossils, gems and elaborated stones are distributed around the pretty old town's streets.

During the four day fair, the sleepy town transforms into a must-visit destination for the worldwide community of gemstones dealers and enthusiasts. Events such as conferences, workshops and visits to mines from this valley are also an option in this amazing show.

I will see you there!

Off to Aberdeen on October 1st!
Internationally recognised gemmologist Helen Plumb is hosting Gemstones Brazil at
Just Gems, her beautiful shop in Aberdeen, on October 1st.

Event starts at 2:30 pm and finishes at 7 pm.

 A little bit about Helen!

Helen graduated with a First in Geological Sciences from the University of Durham in 1985, she has been enthralled by the beauty and complexity of diamonds and coloured gemstones for many years. In 1989 she was awarded the Tully Medal, graduating as the highest achieving student in the Gemmological Association and Gem Testing Laboratory of Great Britain’s (Gem-A) international diploma examinations. After gaining a Fellowship Diploma (FGA) and Diamond Diploma (DGA), both with distinction, she went on to become an examiner for Gem-A, assessing jewellers, valuers, curators, auctioneers and other professionals on their ability to identify natural, treated, simulated and synthetic gemstones. She was recently elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of London (FGS).

Helen is deeply involved in the promotion of education about gemstones in Scotland. Among her many activities, she has talked about synthetic and treated diamonds to The Cavalry and Guards Club in London; demonstrated the amazing array of coloured gemstones to Bank of Scotland Private Banking clients; and has spoken to the Travelling Surgical Society about how to buy jewellery abroad.

At Gemstones Brazil we are very exciting about having such a great hostess!
